solstice shadows

"Everything that we see is a shadow cast by that which we do not see."
~Martin Luther King, Jr

happenings this week
'Twill be nights before Christmas and high overhead, the moon will turn brown or maybe deep red. The Earth and the sun with celestial scripts will conspire to make a lunar eclipse.  (9news)
Since the eclipse coincides with winter solstice (tonight/tomorrow), the moon will appear high in the sky - a boon for skywatchers. With recent volcanic eruptions around the globe dumping tons of dust into the atmosphere, scientists predict the moon may appear darker than usual during the eclipse, glowing an eerie red or brown instead of the usual orange-yellow tinge. Total eclipse begins at 12:41 am MST Tuesday.  On Tuesday, the Winter Solstice occurs at 4:38 p.m. and the Solstice coincides with the only complete eclipse of the full moon in 2010. The last winter Solstice full moons were in 1999 and 1980.

"Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing."
~William James

happenings this week
Chanukah is about the victory of light over darkness. Even more to the point, Chanukah is about the transformation of darkness into light. We can channel that energy daily by turning yesterday's dark moments and failures into tomorrow's accomplishments. Recognizing the darkness is the first step in changing it to light.   ~Matisyahu
